Scottish Winter Climbing

Scotland offers some of the best winter climbing in the world. The wet and windy Scottish conditions create this unique winter playground. Certainly some of the best mixed climbing can be found in the Highlands. You can pull on frozen turf, torque axes in cracks and climb some amazing lines on remote buttresses. Gully climbing is synominous with Ben Nevis. Point 5, Zero, Vanishing gully, Green Gully and Comb gully are just a few classics. Twid runs winter trips to Scotland through out the season.

Suggested Programme
Day 1 Meet in Scotland in Glen Coe. Discuss the weather and avalanche forecast, make a plan accordingly for following days. Check climbing gear, rucksack, crampons, axes etc.
Day 2 Climb around Glen Coe one one of tbe famous peaks Stob Corrie Nan Lochan routes, Tilt VI, Crest Route V, Central Buttress III, Dorsal Arette II.
Day 3 A classic Gully/Ridge climb on Ben Nevis. Point 5, Zero, Orion Face Direct 5, Green Gully 4, Cascade 5, Tower Ridge 4, Ledge Climb 2,eg.
Day 4 Climb on Anoach Mor. Many classic shorter climbs.
Day 5 Creag Meagaigh Post Face5, Smiths 5, Wand 4,
Day 6 Mixed climbing in Northern Corries.

Skills Training
As part of every course whether it is a guided trip or instructional week skills training will be a part of the day. Learning to deal with weather and snow conditions, use avalanche forecasts and be able to interpret testing of snow pack on the hoof. Choosing a safe route through steep terrain and using a map. All ropework to do with snow, ice and mixed climbing.
